J. MICHAEL STRACZYNSKI AND GARY FRANK ON SQUADRON SUPREME!
The Squadron Supreme were a group of costumed adventures who first saw life in a two-part Avengers story from almost 35 years ago. In issues # 85 and 86, through a weird anomaly, several members of the Avengers were transported to the world of the Squadron Supreme. The Squadron was considered to be that world's counterparts to the Avengers and fought to protect their universe much like the Avengers protected theirs. After a mishap between the two teams, they joined forces, thwarted an enemy, and the Avengers returned to their respective universe.
Throughout the '70s and early '80s, the Squadron Supreme appeared as guest stars in a variety of situations and titles throughout the Marvel Universe including another set of Avengers issues, Defenders, and Thor. The heroes weren't that different from other superpowered or costumed adventures, until their own critically-acclaimed twelve-part maxi series written by Mark Gruenwald. In that maxi series we weren't treated to the happy-go-lucky costumed adventures, but to a much grimmer group, who wanted to change the world - whether that was what was best for it or not. Gruenwald heroes were conflicted between their desire to create a perfect world, versus the basic rights of individuals. The road to hell is supposedly paved with good intentions and the Squadron Supreme, in attempting to this Utopia society, may have caused more harm than good. This led to conflicts with former members teamed up with supervillains against the Squadron Supreme - nothing could ever be the same again between these heroes. This was one of the most powerful tales ever written within the Marvel Universe at that time. Many compared its tone and style to DC's Watchmen. It's easy to see the influence of both maxi-series on some of the darker realistic grittier superteams of the late '90s and a lot of today's heroes.
The Squadron Supreme had a few appearances since that maxi series and now are about to make their return in a new ongoing series. It's been rumored for well over a year that some of the biggest names in comics were being considered to create a new Squadron Supreme comic. Everyone from Grant Morrison to rising star Daniel (Deathlok Detour, Tangled Web) Way have been hinted as the writers. While artists from Trevor (Cla$$War, Captain America) Hairsine to Phil Jiminez were also rumored to be drawing the series.
However THE PULSE has learned the creative team is none other than fan favorite J. Michael Straczynski and the Marvel exclusive artist Gary Frank. The two seem a perfect match for this project. THE PULSE was unable to catch up with Straczynski for information about the Squadron Supreme, but Gary Frank had some time to give PULSE readers a little insight into the new Squadron Supreme.
"The Squadron Supreme are basically a version of the JLA for the real world," explained Frank, who admitted to signing on almost immediately when he found out Straczynski was the writer. " I heard some of the things he [JMS] had in mind, I was hooked. Having read the first script, I cannot tell you how exited I am about working on it. It really is the best thing I've read in a long time."
The artist isn't very familiar with the original universe and is purposely keeping himself in the dark. "My knowledge of the original series is pretty superficial. I'm trying to avoid it until the new series is well underway. Joe's approach is that this should be something new so I'm resisting the temptation to read original series until our version has it's own identity."
Speaking of "establishing identities," Frank cited creating believable stories and characters as one of the biggest challenges to working on this new series. "The big thing is taking what are essentially superheroes and thinking how they would really look. We have to pretend that the superhero conventions don't exist. If you were to suddenly get superpowers would you necessarily run out and buy loads of spandex and a cape?"
Although Frank couldn't reveal a lot of details about the first few issues he did comment, "These stories don't take place in the Marvel U or Ultimates. It is our universe with the addition of a handful of super-powered people. The first issue centers around one character and hints at another. I'm just exited to see what else comes up."
There is no release date set for Squadron Supreme, although its speculated that the first issue will be out by Spring 2003. Stay tuned to THE PULSE for updates on this project and other information as we receive it.
GLA?
JMS+Gary Frank+Squadron Supreme=Pflichtkauf!
The avalanche has already started. It is too late for the pebbles to vote.
